Supporting Alzheimer's Caregivers and Research Through Hockey!
Mom, Grandma and Great-Grandma, with big brother Jeff.
Later this week, I will lace up my skates for the Gordie Howe CARES Pro-Am, raising funds for the Gordie Howe CARES Centre for Alzheimer’s Research and Education Society.
As we head into the final days of fundraising before this weekend’s tournament, I’ve been thinking about why this cause matters to me. Losing my mom two years ago was hard and it gave me a better understanding what it must have been like for her and her mom as this illness has affected multiple generations of our family.
Over the past year, that understanding has only grown. Through my work, I find myself speaking with more and more caregivers and families who are navigating the realities of Alzheimer’s and dementia. The impact these diseases have on individuals, spouses, children, and entire support systems is profound. It’s a reminder that this is something affecting so many families in our communities — and that the need for support continues to grow.
That’s one of the reasons this fundraising hockey tournament means so much to me. I’ve been fortunate to be part of it for many years, but each year the cause feels even more personal. The event brings together a community of people who understand these experiences firsthand — a group connected by support, empathy, and a shared desire to make a difference.
Funds raised through this event help provide resources and support for Alzheimer’s caregivers so they can continue caring for their loved ones while also maintaining their own health and well-being. Every donation, no matter the size, truly helps.
If you’re able to support the fundraiser this year, I would sincerely appreciate it. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for supporting a cause that is close to my heart.
Take care,
Randy
